Mystical Experience How Do I Have One? What Is It? - Stacy Clark, MA Good questions! To me it is an uplifting in-body experience of Spirit. There are lots of words for it in lots of languages. I connect with my spiritual path as a mystic, so this one works for me. You could call it a kundalini experience sometimes or satori or an epiphany or an insight or many other words. It is an internal shift in my state of mind or being. I feel connected to my Source. I feel bliss, peace, contentment. It doesn't matter what is happening externally. I could be in the midst of something we'd usually call painful or traumatic. In fact, intensity is a great way to bring on a mystical experience. It's just as likely when I'm mellow. A mystical experience is an experience of "transcendent reality or of God through deep meditation or contemplation" to adapt the definition from my American Heritage Dictionary. That's close. There are more methods and some people wouldn't connect to the idea of God at all (a concept of God is optional and might even get in the way) but that's close. Every spiritual teacher from the beginning of time has wrestled with how to explain mystical experience to their students. More correctly, we have worked to teach you to have your own mystical experience. Because words are only symbols of an experience and not the experience itself, I am never going to be able to give you words that really do it. No one can. Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, Moses and others have used stories, parables and metaphors to give us a hint of what it is to feel our direct connection to Spirit. These well-known teachers, along with Zen masters, yogis, gurus and prophets of every conceivable culture have used these stories, as well as breath (in every variation you can think of), touch (a rap on the head with a stick, healing energy transfer), movement (yoga, Sufi dance), sounds (mantras), even sex and celibacy, both of which can bring us to a mystical experience. Contemporary teachers, including, but certainly not limited to Byron Katie, Steven Sashen, Eckhart Tolle, Leonard Orr, Sondra Ray, Rudi, O Sensei, Lance Wright, Donald Epstein, Ken Keyes, Osho, Samuel Lewis, Margo Anand, Daniel Odier, Betty Dodson, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Rumi, The Beatles, The Moody Blues, Frank Herbert, Douglas Adams, Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, Gene Rodenberry, Mantak Chia, Bill W., David Deida, Marianne Williamson, and hundreds of others still use these methods and more. I couldn't possibly list them all. Did it surprise you that I listed the Beatles and Whoopi Goldberg? The arts connect us to ourselves and to our Source, just as much as any navel contemplation in a Himalayan cave. Some work for me, some don't. The same is true for you. BUT . . . when I know how to access my source inside me, to connect internally on my own, I can find it anywhere, anytime. When we are in that space, we act from a place of truth and wholeness. We spontaneously know what to do and say next. It sounds farfetched to some people, but I have done it and I have shown others how. Now, what I teach may or may not work for you at this time. But what I notice is that people tend to feel better and to have experiences one could describe as mystical experiences, through the things I teach. Would you like to try it for yourself? If so, I'd really like to talk to you and meet you. Distance is no object. I can talk to you on the phone and show you some of these experiences, and how to learn to be in that space yourself.
