Breathwork is my first love in my spiritual work.
In 1985 I did my first group rebirthing breathwork sessions in Dallas, Texas and nothing has been the same since. After the first two groups, I almost felt as if nothing had happened. But then I found myself having an experience that I now describe as turning a mental corner and where there used to be a wall, there is now open space.
No matter what else I learn, I always come back to and keep up with my breathwork.
Since learning Somato-Respiratory Integration (SRI), also known as The 12 Stages of Healing by Dr. Donald Epstein 6 years ago, I have started clients with the first 5 Stage exercises as a foundation for getting in touch with our own body, breath & rhythm before launching into the powerful Rebirthing Breathwork (a Firebreath). In this way, there is preparation for the mind-blowing experiences of an hour of continuous full breathing.
So how does breath relate to sex?
Life energy, known in the East as prana, chi or ki, is carried through our breath, our food and our thoughts. It is this same energy we tap during lovemaking and orgasm. By breathing fully and freely, we have full free spiritual sexual experiences. David Deida writes that "The way of the superior lover involves technical exercises to retrain the body's energy, but primarily it is a matter of practicing love, feeling through the limits on love, and unguardedly being the vulnerable openness that is your true nature, over and over and over--during sex, with family, and at work--so the reflex of separation ceases to bind the heart to the familiar sense of stress that we call 'me'."
By practicing breathwork we learn to keep ourselves open to the Love and energy that created us, infuses our being and maintains our health, wealth and growth as spiritual beings.
